Get to Know Dr. Turner and His Path to Integrative Wellness

November 15, 2021

Integrative Wellness offers a holistic approach to the world of healthcare. It may be considered new age medicine to some, but Integrative Wellness focuses on wellness by addressing the mind, body and spirit through modern medicine techniques and procedures.

Dr. Randall Turner, one of the doctors at Integrative Wellness, made it his mission to help patients by not only addressing the health issues of patients but getting to the root cause of these ailments.

In this blog, Dr. Turner discusses his healthcare background and how his experience led to where he is now at Integrative Wellness.

Where did your interest in holistic healing begin?

I grew up in the country in a place where my grandma was considered the doctor in the house. We hardly ever went to a professional doctor’s office. She took care of me when I was a child and had all of the home remedies.

So, I think that’s what really kept me interested in natural healing. And then of course, I went to college and started studying biology and that really heightened my interest in natural medicine.

What is your educational background?

I went to school at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg which has the distinction of being the smallest town in America with a medical school. I then turned my focus onto Internal Medicine and worked in Massillon, Ohio and Charleston Area Medical Center.

Tell us about your career in medicine.

I started working in hospitals with emergency medicine and found that to be incredibly rewarding. I loved the challenge of not knowing what was coming. It was kind of like an adrenaline rush.

So I turned my focus from internal medicine and I’ve been doing emergency medicine for about 30 years now.

What shifted your focus to more natural forms of treatment?

It was really because of how my family was responding to more natural treatments. In other words, I would see patients come in or my family members, who were sick but never getting better. And most of the time their issues were not being addressed for the root cause.

So I began to find ways that were outside of the box, so to speak. As a natural researcher, I began to do some research on natural healing and started seeking answers for why these patients weren’t getting better. Through that research, I began to understand why integrative medicine could be the answer.

What made you realize integrative medicine could truly heal patients?

Integrative medicine involves not just traditional and conventional medicine, that is a piece of it, but it also involves Eastern medicine, which we’ve known for thousands of years have helped people in numerous ways, like acupuncture. Integrative medicine really provided the missing piece for why so many people were not getting better no matter how many drugs they were prescribed or procedures they underwent.

Integrative medicine is treating the whole body as an entire system and not just a collection of parts.

What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness to me would be the epitome of health, and by that I mean not relying on drugs, procedures, or anything other than what God has provided us to be healthy. So wellness would be being healthy in mind, body and spirit and if we neglect just one part of that, we’re neglecting a large part of our health.

What is unique about Integrative Wellness’ approach to healing?

Our approach involves the entire person — it involves their environment, their diet, their lifestyle, social life and family. And so when we have a patient, we become a part of that patient’s family, so to speak. We get to know them on a level that’s not possible with traditional medical practice. So our approach is a lot different because we take the time to get to know the person. It’s more important to know the person rather than know everything about the disease. Disease and health issues affect everyone’s body and health differently, so with integrative medicine we can optimize the treatment that’s specific to the patient.

What do you see for the future of integrative medicine?

I see the future of integrative medicine exploding. What I see now is that people are starting to realize that the traditional approach isn’t working. They are looking for other ways to get better and stay healthy. The future is bright because we definitely have people looking in that direction now to find out the real answers for their issues.
